It has been an exciting and productive week on the farm! On Monday, November 21, we welcomed our new Farm Educator to the team!
Nightly temperatures are reaching an ideal range for cool season germination. The unseasonably warm weather has extended our fall season. You can see peas sprouting in the picture attached. You can also see garlic getting taller, which will over winter in the soil and be ready for harvest next summer. This week we planted a new succession of cress, arugula, carrots, beets, radishes, lettuce, pak choy, spinach, and other mixed greens. These seedlings will be a beautiful addition around the dinner table at our December 3rd Farm to Table dinner. We have rotated vegetables out of the planter boxes and replaced them with cabbage, mixed greens, peas, dill, cilantro, and onions. We have also added a hearty layer of compost to the boxes to feed the seedlings. Stop by over the next few weeks to see some of the additions to the gardens and watch the progress of new seedlings as well as the brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, cilantro, and dill which should be ready for harvest by the end of the year.
A large amount of time this week was spent wheel hoeing the sides of beds at both the North and South Farms. We have almost completed all of the beds at both farms! The wheel hoe is a wonderful tool for us as it allows us to complete weeding in a much shorter amount of time than we would be able to do by hand or with a scuffle hoe. It allows us to knock down the majority of weeds in a bed between planted rows. However, we will still have to hand weed within the crop rows if the weeds hinder production. The wheel hoe comes with several attachments which makes it a versatile tool for any farmer or gardener. In the picture below, you see the wheel hoe with a seeder attachment which was used to plant the succession of seeds this week.
