We’re excited to introduce our newest Farm Educator Megan to round out our trio! Megan is a recent graduate of Texas A&M University where she earned a double major in bioenvironmental science and plant and soil sciences. While attending A&M she worked on the Howdy Farm, a student-run organic farm located on campus. Her love of plants was instilled at an early age as she grew up literally surrounded by them in her parents’ garden center in Corpus Christi. Her favorite vegetable is broccoli though she has become quite smitten with the purplish-hue of our ruby streaks mustard greens. Make sure to say hello if you see her around the farm!
We’ve been regularly tethering the goats on the North Farm in the open space just south of our planter boxes. The benefits of this are two-fold: they get an opportunity for enrichment and stimulation while also diversifying their diet. A certain percentage of foraging is necessary for their diet in order to balance out the hay and kibble they receive. Contrary to popular belief, our goats don’t particularly like Bermuda grass. Instead, they go for the sweet and tender clover we have planted as part of our cover cropping system.
Our Farmers Market has been going swimmingly since the weather has been cooperating the past couple of weeks. It went so well on Saturday that we actually sold out at the veggie wagon! We were eager to welcome Fort Bend Coffee Roasters to their first market with us. Not only can you buy locally roasted beans at the market but you can get your coffee fix, too! As an added incentive, we’re still holding our market raffle for a basket of local goods. Each purchase at the market earns you a raffle ticket so come out and join us every Saturday from 8am-12pm.
