The First Spaghetti Squash & a Sunn Hemp Maze

Village Farm Team,

We made the first harvest of spaghetti squash this past week! Like butternut squash, spaghetti squash is a variety of winter squash with thicker skin meant for long-term storage. It’s name derives from the appearance of the flesh once it is cooked: it becomes stringy almost like spaghetti noodles. This trait makes spaghetti squash a popular stand-in for traditional pasta that is grain free and full of vitamins and minerals. Curious about this pasta mimicking squash? Come pick some up at the farmers market this Saturday.

Our largest patch of sunn hemp is flowering. As the late summer winds have been picking up hinting at fall’s arrival, it’s been a lovely sight to see the delicate yellow flowers swaying from side to side. In order to have a little fun with our sunn hemp before we mow it down and turn it into mulch, Farm Educator Joshua cut a path through it creating our very own sunn hemp maze. It won’t be up for long so if you find yourself near the farm this week, come visit us and take a stroll through the maze.

We had an awesome turnout of volunteers on the farm this past weekend for okra harvesting. Our second succession of okra has been producing faster than we can harvest so we enlisted the help of volunteers from the Harvest Green community. Though we planted the same number of rows as our first succession, the second succession has given us nearly double the amount of okra. We suspect this could be due to improved drainage in the current location as well as the use of more organic fertilizer. In any case, we hope you guys like okra because we’ve got plenty!

Don’t forget about the National Drive Electric Event happening this Saturday the 21st! We’ll have a special farmers market with an electric car show set up from 9am-12pm. We will also have our amazing vendors out during our usual hours from 8am-12pm selling beautiful local goods like honey, coffee, jams, and soaps. And, just to make sure there’s something for everyone, Gen Yoga will be teaching a mindful yoga flow on the event lawn from 9-10am. We hope to see you there!

Happy Harvesting, The Agmenity Farm Team
