Remember the bok choy, mizuna, and Hakurei turnips we planted in our raised beds over by the model homes a few weeks ago? We planted these with the intention of harvesting them as baby greens and they are just about ready! These crops will give us the leafy greens we’ve been missing since our last kale harvest many months ago. Baby mizuna and Hakurei turnips and greens can be eaten raw in salads while baby bok choy is delicious when lightly steamed or sautéed. Make sure you stop by the veggie wagon on Saturday so you can try some for yourself.
Our sweet potatoes are finally ready for harvest! Though we planned on harvesting them in mid to late July, they weren’t quite ready until this past week. We think excess moisture is to blame for their slower growth this season. We’re taking notes for next year so we can make sure to irrigate them less. Our sweet potatoes are curing in the greenhouse throughout the week so you’ll be able to pick some up this Saturday at the veggie wagon. Not ready to enjoy your sweet potatoes quite yet? They will store at room temperature in your pantry for up to six months, but we have a feeling you’ll enjoy them well before then.
We’re slowly seeding more cool season crops even though the temperatures outside still scream summer. This week we direct-seeded some Crunchy King radishes which are one of our favorite root veggies to snack on. These are fast growers so you can expect to see them on your plate in a little over a month. We also direct-seeded beets and arugula into our raised beds. Eventually we’ll have a whole new lineup of early fall veggies available so make sure you get your fill of zucchini, cucumbers, and okra while you still can!
