Harvesting Snake Gourd and Fall - Winter Season Vegetable Share Launch

September 21st, 2023

We’re harvesting two new crops for you this week: snake gourd and French breakfast radishes! Last month we shared a photo of the gorgeous snake gourd flowers with you and this month we were finally able to harvest some! Snake gourd (pictured above) is a member of the Cucurbit family along with cucumbers and squashes. It has a flavor like green beans and can be added to stir-fries or curries. French breakfast radishes (pictured below) have a delicious crunch and mellow bite. Farmer Nathan loves garnishing tacos with thinly sliced radishes while Farmer Bethany prefers them in a baguette sandwich along with arugula, prosciutto, brie, and quince jam. You will be able to purchase both of these crops at the Farm Stand on Saturday from 9am-noon!

If you want to enjoy more crops like these but can’t always make it to the Farmers Market, we’re pleased to announce our Fall - Winter Season Vegetable Share launch! Our Fall - Winter Season share runs from October through March and is a shift towards more leafy green crops, roots, and brassicas. The first shares will be available October 3rd and you can sign up for one any time from now throughout the rest of the season! Our shares are available for both the public and residents. Residents can choose between free home delivery on Thursdays or on-farm pickups on Tuesdays. Public shares are only available for Tuesday farm pickup. Here are some crops you can look forward to this season: roselle hibiscus pods (pictured below), kale, Swiss chard, watermelon radishes, and scallions. Head here to learn more and sign up for your own share!

Fall planting is in full swing this week! We have a total of 14 rows planted with a delicious mix of leafy greens and root veggies. In order to deter pests, we’re covering all of our new transplants with either netting or the electric fencing we shared last week. The covered rows you see below are planted with lacinato kale, curly kale, Brussels sprouts, and chicory. We also direct-seeded beds with beets, turnips, scallions, watermelon radishes, turnips greens, and another succession of arugula and radishes. We can’t wait to share all of these delicious crops with you!
