A New Team Member & Harvesting Radishes

Village Farm Team,

We’re delighted to introduce our newest Farm Educator Lockey! His vast experience with agriculture has been shaped by his time spent studying at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems in California. Before transitioning to agriculture he was a diesel mechanic in the Army which has proved to be an incredibly beneficial skill set when maintaining farm equipment like tractors. Though he has experience working on farms and ranches in the northern part of the country, he comes to us from right down the road at Loam Agronomics. Make sure to wave hello if you see him around the farm!

We harvested the first radishes this week from our planter boxes. Lucky for us (and for you), radishes are quick-growing root veggies. So, despite planting them just over a month ago, they are ready to make their way onto your plate. Make sure you stop by the farmers market this weekend so you can pick up a bunch or two.

After mowing down the remaining sunn hemp and squashes we were able to till the soil in order to get it ready for bed shaping. Once the beds are shaped we’ll be able to plant a variety of cool season crops like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. They will join the Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, and red cabbage that were transplanted a few weeks ago and are swiftly growing!

We’ve got a special farmers market coming up on the 19th of this month for Halloween. Kids and adults alike are encouraged to dress up in line with an agricultural theme (think animals, veggies, farmers, and scarecrows). All of our vendors will have treats to pass out to the kiddos and Farm Club members will be having a scarecrow contest. Market-goers will be able to vote on their favorite scarecrow and the winning Farm Club member will receive a free month for their plot. We hope to see you there!

Happy Harvesting, The Agmenity Farm Team
