Calling all Harvest Green residents to celebrate dad this Saturday at Village Farm by joining our annual La Tomatina Padre tomato throw! Enjoy lite bites catered with fresh veggies from the farm, while the kids cool off on a giant water slide! Each year La Tomatina Padre also marks the near end of tomato season on the farm, so be sure to stop by the Farmers Market on Saturday morning to pick up fresh cherry, roma, or slicing tomatoes!

As more of our cool season crops like carrots, fennel, and beets phase out of season, our field is flourishing with plants that love hot and humid summers. Luffa and bitter melon are stacked with beautiful yellow blooms and the Asian eggplant adds a pop of deep purple in the field. These new crops are making their way into our weekly Vegetable Share which continues to change throughout the summer as we incorporate storage crops like butternut squash and potatoes. Consider signing up now to enjoy our seasonal summer produce that is unique to the Houston climate!

In between rain showers, we diligently worked to prepare large field blocks to seed new cover crops! This year we are planting sunn hemp and sudan grass which can each grow over six feet tall and add a generous amount of biomass back into the soil. Our cowpeas are well on their way to growing into thick vines before creating pea pods that are also edible. Though recent rains have caused stress for some vegetable varieties, the extra moisture has allowed successful germination of cover crop seeds!

Currently In Season : Slicing Tomatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, Roma Tomatoes, Slicing Cucumbers, Snacking Cucumbers, Italian Eggplant, Asian Eggplant, Long Beans, Okra, Bitter Melon, Luffa, Peppers: Poblano, Banana, Jalapeno, Shishito, Cayenne, Green Bell, and Sweet Bell, Zucchini, Tromboncino, Basil, Onions, Leeks, and Celery Root
