Preparing for Fall Seeding and Harvesting Roselle Greens

It’s almost time for fall seeding in the greenhouse! We just received our fall seed order and will be starting the first round either late this week or early next week. Since our fall is mild, and often still very hot at the beginning of the season, we will be starting with varietals that are more tolerable to the heat. This includes Asian leafy greens in addition to bunched greens like chard and kale. Farmer Nathan is looking forward to seeding komatsuna for its delicious, mild flavor and the welcome variety that it will add to early fall harvests. Keep an eye out for more fall planting updates over the coming weeks! 

Have you had a chance to try any of our roselle greens at the Farm Stand? Roselle is a multi-use crop on the farm, providing us with leafy greens in the summer and cranberry-flavored pods in the fall. Roselle leaves have a tart, lemony flavor that contrasts with all of our summer crops. This year, we are growing two different varieties: Thai and North Florida. Thai roselle (below right) is the one we’ve most commonly grown in the past and has more slender leaves. North Florida (below left), a new variety this year, has bigger leaves and should also produce bigger pods in the fall. Roselle leaves can be enjoyed raw in salads or pestos or added to soups and stir-fries. Make sure to snag a bunch to try at the Farm Stand on Saturday or add them to your Veggie Share!
