New Crops Taking Root

New veggies are only a few weeks away from harvest! Radishes are just beginning to bulb up and arugula is growing quickly in these last warm summer days. The first round of scallions and carrots have also just germinated in the high tunnel! Stay tuned as these Fall vegetable offerings are released first in the Vegetable Share soon!

Last call for butternut squash at the Farmers Market this week! These squash are perfect for roasting now or storing to enjoy a warm butternut soup during the cooler days of Fall. We also have a new summer green at the market, Egyptian Spinach, also known as Molokhia! These leaves have a mild taste and are rich in nutrients - often coined the "food of kings" as it dates back to the time of ancient Egyptian pharaohs!

A taste of the tropics has finally arrived! This week it's not a vegetable but a fruit that has tickled the farmers fancy - a Village Farm grown rack of bananas! As many tropical plants can thrive in the warmth of our Houston climate, the first cold snap usually prevents fruit from fully ripening on the tree. However, these bananas were produced on a potted tree that lives in the greenhouse! Unfortunately, there are not enough mini-bananas to sell - but we highly recommend our long-time Farmers Market vendor, Oyster Creek Tropicals, who gave us this plant!
