Summertime Preparations

Although we have just tasted the first fruits of Spring, preparations are already underway for the summer season. This week we are adding compost and fertilizer to bed tops that will house our first wave of summer crops like long beans, luffa, okra, and bitter melon! These veggies won’t start producing until the end of May, but it’s important to start these plants now so they can thrive in optimal conditions of Spring before the true heat of summer sets in!

If you’ve taken a walk by the farm, you may have also noticed the field covered in blankets of beautiful red and white flowers! Surprisingly, these are not part of our flower patch, but rather mature cover crops of Clover and Buckwheat in full bloom. These plants are intentionally grown to give our soil time to rest and replenish nutrients that have been removed from harvesting nutrient-dense vegetables. These cover crops will soon be mowed and left to decompose in the field, acting as an organic source of compost for future vegetable crops.

After a week of acclimating to their new home, our chicken flock is enjoying the outdoor landscape with plenty of room to roam! They especially love searching for small bugs to snack on and taking dust baths in the newly mulched coop. Dust bathing is a way chickens clean their feathers and regulate body temperature, typically done in social groups together that some coin as “chicken yoga!” Be sure to stop by the Farmers Market this Saturday from 9am - 1pm and take a walk through the farm to meet our new flock!
