Special Holiday Farm Stand and the First Brussels Sprouts of the Season

December 21st, 2022

In case you missed our farm update last week, we will not have a farm stand or farmers market on Saturday, December 24th or 31st. Instead, we’ll have two special holiday farm stands for you on Wednesday, December 21st and 28th! These farm stands will be held from 4-6pm at The Farmhouse in the Harvest Green Community. Both residents and non-residents are welcome to pop by and stock up on our delicious organic produce. The Farmhouse is located at 3400 Harvest Corner Drive here in Richmond. We’d love to see you!

We have a little holiday surprise for you: Brussels sprouts! We’ll have the first Brussels sprouts of the season for you at the special holiday farm stand today (Wednesday, December 21st). As you can see in the photo above, Brussels sprouts form buds along the main stem of the plant. In order to enjoy them, you simply snap or cut them away from the stem. Brussels sprouts can be shredded and added to slaws or salads. Or, you can roast them in the oven or sear them in a skillet so that their natural sugars begin to caramelize.

We’ll be spending the remainder of this week preparing for the impending wintry weather. Since we’ll be experiencing a hard freeze (a sustained period of time with temperatures less than 28 degrees), we expect to have some crop losses. In order to prevent having a total loss, our goal is to cover our more established crops with frost cloth. We’re also bulk harvesting some of our storage crops that can be kept in the walk-in cooler for longer periods of time. And, we’re fortifying our animal pens and greenhouse to keep them as warm as possible. We’ll have a post-frost update for you next week but in the meantime, stay warm out there!
