Seeds Ordered & Egg Watch Continues

Village Farm Team,

Though weeds and general farm prep has taken up most of our attention as of late, we were able to order our winter crop seeds this week! Since our typical fall crop designated for Harvest Fest was lost in Harvey, we are moving on to our winter crop. When choosing what crops to plant in the winter in our area, we have to consider those that are both heat tolerant and able to survive a short frost since they will most likely be harvested in January. Among the varieties ordered were broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, chard, mustard greens, carrots, beets, leeks, and Texas sweet onions.

Since we received a good bit of rain this past week and the ground has been too wet to till, the farm team was been able to spend more time working in the greenhouse. They were able to seed several transplant trays with snow crown cauliflower, green magic broccoli, and jade cross Brussels sprouts.

Egg watch continues this week! We estimate that our hens have another two to four weeks before they begin laying, but the team has been vigilant in checking for eggs every day. In order to get the hens used to laying eggs in the coop, the team will be buying golf ball stand-ins and placing them where they will eventually have their nests. This helps to guide our ladies to lay their eggs in the right spot when the time comes.

Our two Village Farm Club information sessions last week and this week had great turnouts! We were able to go over general rules and policies as well as answer your questions. One of our hens Paulette was also in attendance to provide comic relief and make her opinion known. This Saturday (October 7th) we will be hosting a farm club orientation on the north farm. It will be more hands-on than the information sessions and Farm Educator Ryan will go over the general layout, tool use, and other topics in depth. The official launch of our farm club will occur later this month on the 21st. To submit an application for farm club or see our events calendar head HERE.

Happy Harvesting,

The Agmenity Farm Team
