Earth Day Market on April 20th

April 4th, 2024

Earth Day is coming up on the 22nd of this month and there’s no better place to celebrate it than Village Farm! We invite you to join us for our annual Earth Day Market on Saturday, April 20th, from 9am-1pm. Help beautify the farm’s habitat by participating in the Oyster Creek cleanup, visit with our resident goats and chickens, and plant some seedlings for spring. In addition to the Earth Day activities, you’ll be able to support local artisans and sustainable business by shopping at our Farmers Market. The Oyster Creek cleanup begins at 10am but all of the other activities can be attended at any point during the event. This event is open to the public and free of charge so we hope to see you there!

Zucchini made its way into season last week and this week we are thrilled to offer you patty pan squash as well! This variety (above) is called Y-star and it yields tender scalloped squashes that are yellow and green. It’s an early season squash since it struggles with the heat so make sure to enjoy it while it’s in season! Due to its unique shape, patty pan squash is great for stuffing and roasting. It can also be enjoyed in the same manner as zucchini. We will have patty pan squash at the Farm Stand this Saturday so make sure to pick some up!

We’re incredibly close to our first cucumber harvest! We have two rows planted in the tunnel and two rows in the field. The first round planted in the tunnel is already fruiting and should yield a small harvest next week. As you can see in the photo above, we have our tunnel cucumbers trellised in the same manner as our tunnel tomatoes. This method will require some pruning and eventually, we’ll employ the lower and lean method as our plants reach the height of the tunnel. We’re looking forward to sharing more about this process with you soon!
