Neill Elementary Harvest of the Month

March 14th, 2024

Every month we provide our organic produce for the Harvest of the Month Program at Neill Elementary School. The featured harvest last month was our vibrant and sweet rainbow carrots. This program, observed throughout all of the elementary schools in Fort Bend ISD, features a different vegetable or fruit each month. In addition to tasting the featured harvest, they get to learn fun facts, nutrition, and plant biology. We love connecting kids with the farm and locally grown veggies so it’s always a joy to hear from parents about their experiences each month!

Have you signed up to volunteer at our Fig Orchard Planting Day yet? This volunteer opportunity is a great way to invest in the future of the farm and our community. With your help, we’ll be planting 50 more fig trees in the orchard space. We’re planting a mix of varieties that will allow us to harvest figs continuously from June through September. Since these trees will need the opportunity to develop and grow for a while, you won’t see any figs from them for about the first three years. If you’d like to join us, we encourage you to sign up here so we can make sure to have plenty of tools and refreshments available!

We’re harvesting something new for you this month: celery! You’ll notice that our celery is a little different than what you’re used to seeing at the grocery store. It has shorter, more slender stalks and robust leaves. It has a stronger flavor that makes it perfect for using as the base of soups, stews, and roasts. It’s also great for juicing! We typically don’t devote a huge amount of space to celery in the field because it’s an exceptionally slow grower. We transplanted this celery back in the fall! Make sure to pick up some celery from the Farm Stand this weekend before it makes its way back out of season.
