North Farm Transplanting Nearly Complete & Preparation for the Holidays

Village Farm Team,

We are nearly done with our transplanting on the north farm! Our brassicas and chard were joined by kale, romaine lettuce, and Bibb lettuce this past week. Plus, we have our nifty new signage up by the rows to help with identification and the overall aesthetics of the farm. Ever wondered why it’s called “Bibb” lettuce? This tender lettuce variety derives its name from John Bibb, a farmer in Kentucky who developed the variety from Boston lettuce in the 1850s.

Are you looking for a way to have a closer relationship with your food and where it comes from in the new year? Consider becoming a part of our Village Farm Club! Farm Club is a unique opportunity for the residents of Harvest Green to engage in the neighborhood’s agricultural character in a deeper manner. The residents who join Farm Club will be able to learn how to grow their own food in the context of the larger Village Farm setting with the technical expertise of the Farm Educators. Though our weather has warmed up again for the moment, our goats are ready for winter with their warm and fluffy undercoats. One of our ladies, Ginger, got to show off her fluffy coat and meet Santa at brunch last week. Though she thoroughly enjoyed it, we think Santa and all of the attendees probably did, too. Our goats and chickens have been enjoying treats of fresh rosemary and oregano lately. These herbs have naturally occurring antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties making them great for use as a natural de-wormer.

We’ve gussied up our Farmall tractor for the holidays! If you’re looking for a place to snap a few quick family photos, feel free to head down to the south farm and take advantage of our festive tractor setup. Though our Farmall sports some festive colors on its own, we accented it with some wreaths, bows, and bales of hay. As we move into the holidays, the farm will be closed on December 24th – 25th, closing early on December 31st, and closed on January 1st. From all of us here on the Agmenity Farm Team we wish you and yours a very happy holiday!
