The First Mustard Green Harvest of the Season

Remember the beds we were renovating last week in preparation for more cool season veggies? We direct-seeded them with peas, arugula, beets, carrots, a lettuce mix, and a spicy mustard mix. We also transplanted more brassicas from the greenhouse like Bilko Chinese Cabbage. The transition from summer to fall can be a slow one in our growing climate so we’re excited to finally see it taking shape.

We made our first mustard green harvest last week! Both our Green Wave and Wasabina mustard greens are ready for harvest and are looking mighty beautiful. For this first succession of mustard greens, we implemented a row cover once they were transplanted in order to help with pest control. Though flea beetles love mustard greens, we’ve also been having issues with larger pests like rabbits. Luckily this method worked for us and our mustard greens have minimal damage. If you’ve been missing these delicious leafy greens, they’re officially back in season and can be picked up on Saturdays at the veggie wagon from 8am-12pm.

We recently changed our drip line irrigation setup in order to maximize growing space in our beds. Originally, each bed (or row) would have a single drip line running down the middle. Since our beds are quite wide, we decided to start installing two drip lines per bed. This allows us to maximize our growing space while efficiently irrigating all of our crops. And, it means more fresh veggies for our community!
