A New Team Member

Village Farm Team,

We’re excited to welcome Nick DeBrock to the farm team! Nick studied crop science at the University of Illinois and upon graduation accepted an internship at an organic family farm in Connecticut. He spent five years at the farm working from intern all the way up to crop production manager. As lovely as Connecticut farming was, he decided to make his way down to Houston in order to broaden his knowledge of growing zones and work at a community farm in the historic Sunnyside neighborhood. From there he made his way to us and we are thrilled to have him on our team.

Recovery continues this week from Tropical Storm Beta. Over the last week we removed our remaining fall tomatoes and a few rows of peppers as they weren’t able to fully recover from the rain. We’ve also been doing quite a bit of weeding in order to stay on top of their explosive growth. As for our first succession of brassicas in the ground, they are doing really well! They will soon be joined by the 30 trays we’ve been able to seed in the greenhouse.

We’re just starting to harvest our early fall crops which has been an exciting addition to our summer stalwarts like okra and eggplant! For leafy greens, we’ve been able to harvest peppery arugula and mizuna. And for our roots, we’ve been able to harvest radishes and Hakurei turnips. We highly recommend taking advantage of these veggies in their raw form as they are delightfully tender and incredibly delicious. You’ll be able to purchase these fall crops at the veggie wagon this Saturday from 8am to noon.

Please note the veggie wagon is still open on Saturdays from 8am-12pm but with more stringent sanitary protocols in place!

Happy Harvesting, The Agmenity Farm Team
