Planting Cucumbers & Squash

Village Farm Team,

We’re still transitioning between seasons on the farm as broccoli, cabbages, and kale are slowly making their way out of season and the consistently warmer temperatures have allowed us to start planting crops for spring. There’s definitely a short window of time when you can see a tomato growing on the farm with broccoli just a few rows down. Speaking of tomatoes, ours are coming along nicely thanks to the weather! Our cherry varieties will be among the first to mature so we hope you’re getting all of your tomato recipes ready.

The first succession of several varieties of squash and cucumbers were planted this week. For cucumbers, we seeded both Diva and Corinto varieties. These are both thinner skinned varieties made for slicing and snacking. For squash, we seeded Dunja (a zucchini variety), Zephyr (a yellow summer squash variety), Desert (a zucchini variety), Slick Pick (a yellow summer squash variety), Eight Ball (a round zucchini variety), and Yellow Crookneck.

We’ve been slowly adding new herb varieties to our planter boxes as space has become available. Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been able to plant sage, oregano, and thyme. We also have a couple of flowering plants in our boxes with edible blooms like calendula and nasturtium. Have you ever eaten a nasturtium flower? They have a distinctly peppery and floral bite that makes for a lovely garnish. And, our pollinators love them, too!

Please note the veggie wagon is still open on Saturdays from 8-12 but with more stringent sanitary protocols in place!
