Harvesting Fall Root Crops and Farm Tour this Saturday

October 26th, 2023

Two of our fall root crops just made their way back into season: watermelon radishes and Hakurei turnips. As you can see in the photo above, watermelon radishes are larger in size and have a distinctive magenta interior. They can be enjoyed fresh in salads but they’re also equally delicious when roasted, pickled, or fermented. Hakurei turnips (pictured below) are white in color and smaller in size than a standard turnip. They have a distinctive sweet flavor and can be enjoyed raw or cooked. Our bunches of Hakureis will include a couple of scarlet turnips in the mix. You’ll be able to find these fall root veggies at the Farm Stand this weekend!

If you’re curious about the taste of our sweet Hakurei turnips, we highly recommend coming to our Farm Tour this Saturday, October 28th, from 10-11am! You’ll be able to sample a fresh Hakurei turnip while touring all of our current and upcoming fall crops. And, you’ll be able to see our fully constructed caterpillar tunnel! In case you missed out on the pumpkin patch photo-op at the market last weekend, you still have the opportunity to snap some pictures at the end of the tour. Our tours are open to the public and free of charge. We hope to see you there!

We know a lot of you out there absolutely love carrots so you’ll be pleased to know that we have two different successions planted that should give us a steady supply once they mature! Carrots require a large upfront investment due to their specific watering, weeding, and thinning needs. This pays off once they’re harvested since they are a really great storage crop! Our first round of carrots (pictured below) germinated well and is coming in beautifully. We just seeded our second round this week so we should begin seeing germination in the next week or so.
