Post Hurricane Farm Update
July 12th, 2024

We hope you’re faring well after Hurricane Beryl. Overall, the farm is doing okay despite some damage to our structures and crops. In order to prepare for the high winds, we removed the plastic covering from our three tunnels prior to the hurricane. The endwalls and frames for all of our tunnels will need repairs. Since most of the crops in the first two tunnels did not survive the storm, our goal is to focus on the third tunnel for the time being until we are able to tackle the remaining two. The third tunnel is planted with peppers which made it through mostly unscathed.

Our other main goal is to salvage what we can in the field that was not completely destroyed in the storm. Our primary assessment is that our trellised crops like long beans and cucumbers will bounce back after we fix their support systems. As the field dries out, we’ll be able to flip some of our beds and plant another round of summer crops to mitigate our losses. Though the Veggie Share is on pause this week, the Farmers Market will still be taking place this Saturday from 9am-noon with limited offerings. We would love to see you there if you feel like getting out and about!
