Preparing for Our Community Fig Orchard Planting Day

November 2nd, 2023

We are getting really excited for you to join us for our Community Fig Orchard Planting Day next Saturday, November 11th! This volunteer opportunity is a fantastic way to gain some hands-on fruit tree planting experience while leaving your mark on the Harvest Green community. We’ll supply you with all the tools you need plus refreshments to keep you fueled. The event takes place from 9am-noon and is open to the public. We encourage you to sign up here to help us get a headcount for refreshments. We can’t wait to plant some fig trees with you!

Our new caterpillar tunnel is complete and ready for the first planting! The last step involved putting a layer of compost on top of each bed. Since this will be the first planting, we added a thicker layer of compost than normal in order to give our crops a good start. We’ll be sowing snap peas, spinach, and lettuces here in the next couple of days. We can’t wait to share their progress with you over the next few weeks!

Remember the winged beans we planted back in the summer? We are happy to report that we’ll have some for you at the Farm Stand this weekend! As you can see in the photo below, the beans have a distinctive frilly appearance. Winged beans have a flavor similar to green beans but a bit more nutty. They are best when cooked and make a really great addition to stir-fries and salads. They’re currently in peak production so we recommend stopping by to get some this weekend!
