We are excited to share that broccoli is on the harvesting horizon! This first round is a new variety called “Umpqua” that produces smaller heads but is faster growing. It also has the ability to produce side shoots for a few weeks after the main head is harvested which is always a plus. This variety is purported to be “sweet and succulent” so we can’t wait to try it along with you! Though we might have a very small harvest available this week, you can certainly expect to see it at the Farm Stand next week.

Remember the beds in the north field we were preparing last week for long day crops? We planted the first round of Brussels sprouts there! Since Brussels sprouts require a lengthy growing period (about 100 days), we’re using weed fabric on these rows. This will cut down significantly on time spent weeding during the lifetime of these plants. In addition to Brussels sprouts, we also planted the first round of fennel (below) and radicchio.

It’s time to plant a round of winter cover crops in some of our beds! Planting cover crops throughout the year in different areas of the farm is a great way for us to keep our soil healthy. For the cooler months, we’re growing a combination of crimson clover and rye. These will provide great ground cover to suppress weed growth while also fixing nitrogen to the soil. When mowed down, they will incorporate organic material back into the soil. The rain over the weekend definitely helped give everything a jumpstart!
