Looking for some mindful movement this weekend? Harvest Green residents are invited to enjoy a yoga class and smoothie at the Farmers Market this Saturday, June 21st, at 9am in celebration of both International Yoga Day and National Smoothie Day. The yoga class will be held at the market from 9-10am followed by a refreshing smoothie from Smart Drinks. If you prefer not to participate in the class, free smoothies will be available to the first 60 residents, after which they will be available for purchase for the duration of the Farmers Market. This class is suitable for ages 12 and up and attendees should plan on bringing their own mat. Sign up here to reserve your spot.

Last week we harvested nearly 800 pounds of butternut squash! They’ve been curing on tables in the greenhouse (above), a process that helps toughen their skin and prepare them for storage. A common misconception about winter squashes like butternuts is that they are grown in the fall and winter, but these plants are frost-sensitive and thrive during the warmer months of the year. Their thick skin allows them to be stored for long periods of time, which will come in handy during our leaner summer season into early fall. You can expect to see the first butternut squashes make their way to the Farm Stand next Saturday!

It’s shaping up to be a great year for melons on the farm! We think it’s safe to say that you’ve shared our enthusiasm about the watermelons and cantaloupes over the last week. We highly recommend making your way to the Farm Stand on Saturday between 9am-noon to snag one, or add some to your Veggie Share. In the coming weeks as watermelons and cantaloupes make their way out of season, we’ll be harvesting Arava melons and eventually Korean melons. Arava (below) resembles a honeydew with aromatic green flesh while the Korean melons have a crunchy texture and mildly sweet flavor with notes of apple and pear. Stay tuned so you know the moment they hit the Farm Stand!
