Fall Transplants & Preparing for Inclement Weather

Village Farm Team,

Despite the heat, our farm team has been working hard to continue prep for fall planting. Various transplants including tomatoes, basil, eggplant, and melons were planted on the South Farm this past week. The recent rains have led to increased weed growth so the team has been working extra hard to stay on top of the never-ending task of weeding.

Work continued on the North Farm this week to prepare the soil for our various cropping systems and fall transplants. Our planter boxes are also being prepped and were filled with healthy, new soil.

You might have seen a couple of new faces around the farm. Ryan and Adam are our newest farm educators so make sure to say hi if you see them out and about! We’ll formally introduce them in the coming weeks.

As you’ve probably noticed, the weather is less than ideal during the latter part of our summer here in Texas. This time of year we see a decrease in variety and crop yields so we focus instead on preparing and planting for fall. From this point forward, there will only be a village farm produce stand open on Saturdays as opposed to a full blown farmers market. The farmers market will return later on in the fall. Due to inclement weather, the produce stand will not be open this coming Saturday.

As Hurricane Harvey approaches the Gulf coast, preparations are underway at the farm. Our priority is to make sure the animals are taken care of and evacuated if need be. If you haven’t already, make sure to gas up your vehicle and stock up on non-perishables, batteries, candles, matches, and bottled water. Be safe and smart out there!
