More Brassicas Transplanted & Leafy Greens Seeded

The brassica transplanting party continued on the North Farm this week. In addition to our graffiti cauliflower and Belstar broccoli, we were able to add red express cabbage to the mix. With the help of some avid volunteers, the farm team has now planted approximately 1,500 to 2,000 transplants. Since members of the brassica family thrive in cooler temperatures with consistent irrigation, our new transplants loved the cold and rainy weather that moved through at the end of this week!
Next time you need some fresh herbs, consider stopping by our veggie wagon on Saturdays from 8am to noon. We have a wide variety of herbs including rosemary, oregano, lemongrass, garlic chives, and basil as well as seasonal transplants like nasturtiums and mustard greens. We’ve also been able to harvest magenta spreen from our south fields. Also called tree spinach, magenta spreen has soft green leaves with a touch of iridescent magenta on the top of each stem. It is a member of the amaranth family and has a taste similar to chard or spinach. Curious? Come try some!
The farm team seeded several trays of leafy greens in the greenhouse this past week. Since greens have a shorter time to maturity, we expect to be able to harvest these either at the end of January or the beginning of February. Among the varieties planted were red Russian kale, fordhook giant Swiss chard, tendergreen mustard, and buttercrunch bibb lettuce.
Have you noticed the new signage around the farm? Permanent signage was installed in order to designate specific areas on the farm such as farm club, our post-harvest area, and our north and south fields. We even have re-usable wooden signs that can be placed next to our rows of growing veggies to easily identify them. Not only are these signs aesthetically pleasing, they will make it easier for visitors and volunteers to navigate the farm.
