Last year at this time Village Farm was covered in a blanket of snow, and this week we find ourselves hustling in preparation for yet another timely winter storm! Our days this week are spent bulk harvesting storage crops, anchoring down frost cloth, supplementing hay and food for farm animals, and seeding in abundance for post-freeze planting. One of our main goals is to be able to provide quality vegetables to Harvest Green residents and faithful customers for as long as possible. An abundance of storage crops will be harvested and can stay fresh in the fridge for multiple weeks like cabbage, carrots, and fennel. We have high hopes that crops in our high tunnels will survive the freeze and be harvestable in weeks to come.

Despite an expectedly cold Saturday, our farm team is dedicated to provide a last chance opportunity for the community to stock up on veg! If you find yourself shopping in preparation for the freeze, feel free to stop by our Veggie Wagon from 9am - 1pm on Saturday! This will likely be the last occasion to take advantage of a diverse array of vegetables until the Spring season, as we take inventory of the field post-freeze.

While we weather the storm, our greenhouse is beaming in anticipation for Spring! This week we up-potted over 200 tomato plants, which will allow them to establish more extensive roots and healthy foliage before transferring them to the high tunnel. We also seeded flowers in expectation for our annual Mother’s Day Bouquet event! Farmer Alyssa has added a few exciting varieties that she hopes will not only excite our community, but also the resident hummingbirds that enjoy farm fresh nectar.
