Seasonal Gardening Series this Saturday and Harvesting Asian Greens
October 12th, 2023
Did you know that October is the best time to get your fall garden started? If you’re looking for some pointers, make sure you join us for our Seasonal Gardening Series this Saturday, October 14th, on the farm! This beginner level class takes place from 10-11am with Farmer Nathan and covers the October-March growing season. In addition to learning what specific varieties to grow in our climate, participants will be able to take part in a hands-on planting activity and bring home resources like a planting and spacing guide! This class is open to the public. Make sure to secure your spot here!
Many of our Asian leafy greens are coming into season this week! Since they’re often more heat tolerant and grow quicker than other leafy green crops like kale or Swiss chard, they are among the first leafy greens available during the fall season. One of our favorites is Tokyo Bekana (pictured above), a loose headed Asian cabbage with tender leaves. It can be enjoyed both raw and cooked and has a lovely mild flavor. We’re also excited to be able to offer our turnip greens (pictured below) this week! This is the first season we’ve grown this variety and we have been pleasantly surprised by how tender and sweet the leaves are! You can find both of these leafy greens along with many others at the Farm Stand this weekend.
Remember the brand new caterpillar tunnel growing space we mentioned a couple of weeks ago? Here’s what it looks like this week! Before the frame was erected, we added a layer of compost to the soil and shaped all of the growing beds. Then, we were able to stake out the four corners and go from there! The next step is to add the doors, greenhouse film, and irrigation. Our goal is to be able to start planting here by the end of the month. We’ll make sure to keep you updated on our progress!
