We have a couple of fun things on the horizon for you THIS weekend! On Saturday at the Farmers Market, the Frozen in Paradise food truck will be joining us from 9am-noon. They will be selling all types of frozen treats to keep you cool like popsicles and frozen lemonade. On Sunday (June 29th) from 1-2pm, we’ll be hosting our monthly Meet the Farm Tour. This month’s tour will include a discussion on which crops thrive in the summer heat. We’ll end the tour with a sample of our super fragrant and refreshing Arava melons (above) that just made their way into season. Our tours are open to the public and free of charge but space is limited in order to provide the best experience possible. Make sure to sign up here if you plan to attend!

The summer heat is here to stay which means it’s time for our summer leafy greens to hit the Farm Stand. Malabar spinach is one of our primary summer greens every year. It is not a true spinach but rather the leaves have a similar mild flavor. Malabar spinach is a tropical vining plant with succulent leaves which can be enjoyed raw or cooked. An easy way to enjoy the leaves is to stir-fry them with ginger, garlic, and some of our Thai chilis. The leaves can also be added to curries and soups or you can use the larger leaves like you would a lettuce wrap. Make sure to pick some up to try at the Farm Stand on Saturday!

As we move into the summer season, we intentionally plant more cover crops than food crops in order to streamline our footprint and allow the soil to be rejuvenated during the hottest part of the year. This year we tried a summer mix cover crop made up of sorghum-sudan grass, cowpeas, soybeans, millet, and buckwheat. This combination (below) is great for building up a lot of organic matter in a short amount of time. We seeded this mix just 5 weeks ago and the plants are nearly as tall as we are! We’ll be mowing this area and reseeding it with cowpeas which stay a manageable height and provide terrific ground cover through the summer.
